Kebesaran Hati (Generosity)

       Charles Dickens pernah memberikan pernyataan tentang siapakah sebenarnya orang yang disebut terbesar itu. Ia berkata, "Ada orang besar yang menjadi besar dengan cara mengecilkan dan merendahkan orang lain. Tetapi, seorang besar sejati adalah seorang yang mampu membuat setiap orang merasa dirinya besar."

       Hampir setiap orang ingin menjadi nomor satu dan terkemuka. Tidak semua orang mempunyai kebesaran hati untuk menjadi orang nomor dua. Namun, Yohanes Pembaptis memahami benar arti sebuah kebesaran sejati. Di saat begitu banyak orang mulai ribut dan membanding-bandingkannya dengan Yesus, Yohanes Pembaptis justru menunjukkan kebesaran hatinya. Pernyataannya bahwa Yesus harus makin besar, tetapi ia harus makin kecil menunjukkan betapa ia tidak berusaha membesarkan dirinya sendiri. Ia tahu panggilan Tuhan baginya sebagai pembuka jalan bagi Mesias yang akan datang (Yohanes 3:28). Tujuan hidupnya adalah mengarahkan hati orang-orang kepada Yesus, Sang Mesias, dan bukan kepada dirinya sendiri.

       Bagaimana dengan kita? Bagaimana reaksi kita ketika di hadapan kita berdiri orang-orang yang siap menggantikan posisi kita? Apa reaksi kita ketika banyak orang mulai membanding-bandingkan kemampuan kita dengan orang lain? Apakah kita mulai terganggu? Seorang besar sejati tentu tidak akan terganggu dengan semua itu. Sebaliknya, ia akan menunjukkan kebesaran hatinya untuk membuat orang lain merasa dirinya besar. Ia akan memberi dukungan dan turut senang dengan keberhasilan orang lain.

"He must increase, but I must decrease."

        Charles Dickens never gave a statement about who the person who called the greatest. He said, "There are great people who make it big by way of discouraging and demeaning others. However, is a true big man who is able to make every one feel themselves great."

        Almost everyone wants to be number one and leading. Not all people have the magnanimity to become the number two. However, John the Baptist understanding the true meaning of true greatness. In a time when so many people started to fuss and comparisons with Jesus, John the Baptist actually shows his greatness. Statement that Jesus must increase, but he must decrease shows how he does not try to raise himself. He knew God's call for him as paving the way for the coming Messiah (John 3:28). His goal is to drive people's hearts to Jesus, the Messiah, and not to himself.

        What about us? How do we react when we stand in front of people who are ready to replace us? What is our reaction when many people start to compare our abilities with others? Are we getting annoyed? A true great of course not be bothered with all that. Instead, it will show the greatness of his heart to make other people feel great. He will provide support and also pleased with the success of others.
