Charles Spurgeon dan istrinya suatu saat menjual telur ayam peliharaan mereka. Mereka benar-benar menjualnya, tidak memberikan secara cuma-cuma, bahkan kepada saudara atau kerabat dekat. Kita hidup di tengah dunia yang begitu mudah membicarakan masalah dan keburukan orang lain. Lihat saja tayangan televisi atau ambillah lembaran koran, kita akan mendapati banyak liputan gosip tak sedap. Tanpa sadar kita jadi mulai terbiasa dan ikut terseret dalam arus kebiasaan itu. Betapa sering kita menilai seseorang sebatas apa yang kita lihat dan kita ketahui. Alih-alih mencari fakta yang sebenarnya, mendoakan, dan menjaga nama baik orang itu, kita cenderung mempergunjingkannya.
Alkitab mengajarkan pentingnya mengendalikan lidah. Salah satu caranya dengan tidak menyebarluaskan atau membicarakan masalah seseorang pada orang lain yang tak perlu mengetahuinya. Jika saudara kita berbuat salah, kita diminta untuk menegurnya dengan kasih, bukan mempergunjingkannya. Nah, sebagai anak Allah, kita sepatutnya belajar menggunakan lidah untuk mengasihi, bukan untuk menyakiti satu sama lain.
